Proposal for Technical Infotainment

Short Term Goal

1) Updating of newsletter : Every Sub-committee should be able to write and submit
articles to post on site. (At least one for each semester for each subcommittee)
- Why is there a need for this activity?
To let members be updated with the latest Open Source News (One of our intro in the
web site and club)
- What do you want to achieve out of this activity ?
Members should get more knowledge out of the news. Foster the Open Source Movement within NTU
- How are you going to achieve it ?
As above. It's good if other technical directors follow suit.

2) Sharing Session: Every Sub-committee should submit fresh ideas, and agreed upon stuff to be shown.
We should have regular sharing session for members. Implementation for monthly or once every 2
month.
- Why is there a need for this activity ?
Open Source Infotainment Tools are useful to students. But however many lack the marketing and
publicity and as well as the skills to use them.
It is important to share any useful tools for the members.
- What do you want to achieve out of this activity ?
To let members know and explore open source infotainment software,
- How are you going to achieve it ?
Audience are most probably students. So it will be towards useful tools for students.

Long Term Goal

3) Open Source Gaming Competition
- Why is there a need for this activity ?
Some might be quite interested when the OS Technical Director play Frets on Fire a lot.
We would help to foster Open Source Gaming as some of the games are nice.
It would bring crowds and publicity to the club if such competition is held.
- What do you want to achieve out of this activity ?
We need to achieve good publicity to the club and we create ample opportunity for
people to know about open source games.
- How are you going to achieve it ?
For this, we need to talk to the gaming society in Singapore such that we can hold a joint event.

Things are being worked out from there.

4) Find alternative tools for CITS proprietary tools
- Why is there a need for this activity ?
NTU Students especially our members are finding difficulties because CITS provides proprietary tools
to students. Most of the time, it might not be compatible to Open Source OS.
- What do you want to achieve out of this activity ?
We need CITS to help implement and suggest tools that are compatible to Open Source OS so
NTU Students and Members will not feel so frustrated if they are forced to use a proprietary system
like Windows just to access the Slides(In Exe) and Non-Standards Compliant Documents.
- How are you going to achieve it ?
We need to find the proprietary tools CITS is suggesting to lecturers and students.
And we need to find alternatives solutions and recommend to them.
And also we also need to get the support of people.

5) Introduce Open Source tools to be placed inside NTU Library Computers and labs
- Why is there a need for this activity ?
There is a need to place open source tools inside NTU Library Computers and labs so people
will have more choice of choosing it. Software like Firefox/Dia/OpenOffice.org are
good programs that deserve to stand side-by-side with Proprietary Software in the computers.
- What do you want to achieve out of this activity ?
We hope to foster Open Source Software adoption within NTU. As well as to aid members
when they visit the libraries and labs to use Open Source Software.
- How are you going to achieve it ?
We need to find a number of suitable software first. After that, we need to talk with the
NTU Library IT staff about them. And also as well as lab techs in SCE for them to
adopt Open Source Software in the computer systems. We might need to assist them
in putting the software in it and testing it.
